Steer is driven by a philosophy of doing it better: collaboratively, with integrity, and drawing from deep industry experience. Our consultants bring large firm and diverse industry backgrounds to offer expertise in speciality areas that is unparalleled by other brokerages our size.
Your partners in risk management
We believe brokerage service should be more than sending out insurance renewal applications and invoices. We continually monitor and assess the market and proactively flag risks when legislation or case law changes may impact your business.
As your partners, we work hard to earn your trust. That means taking the time to ensure you completely understand the risks facing your business and the options for managing them. And it means working in your interest, not those of the insurer, of stock market demands or of brokers’ commissions.
Steer’s roots go back to 1970. Since then, we’ve grown, expanded and carried forward the entrepreneurial thinking that launched the company.
The brokerage began as a family venture started by Chris Steer. Chris saw a need—and an opportunity—to change the way insurance was handled for household goods moving and storage. That expertise extended to freight, logistics and allied fields and soon the company became a meaningful player in the Toronto commercial brokerage space.
In 2011, Marc Puddy purchased the firm and rebranded it as Steer Inc. Since then, our business has expanded in both size and scope. We have added new areas of expertise, including the most recent areas of cannabis and cyber insurance, and we introduced true international capabilities through a vast network of like-minded private businesses. Our team has grown to nearly 20. In September 2019, we also opened a second office in Calgary, Alberta to better serve our western Canadian clients.
Steer’s vision for the future is clear: to build upon the past 50 years with the same energy, passion and dedication to our clients that have been the key to our success for half a century.
